Training & Development

Continual training and development are essential in all aspects of photography. I decided to change my photography path after photographing a close family friend’s newborn baby to specialise in Baby and Newborn Photography.

CLAIRE ELLIOTT 1-2-1 TRAINING
Claire Elliott – Stand-In-Baby UK Ambassador

Searching for a Newborn and Baby Photography trainer, I found one specialist trainer I wanted to learn from, and that was Claire Elliott. I had already heard of Claire through her Ambassadorship with Stand-In-Baby and her reputation as a Newborn Photography trainer on the photographic circuit and The Guild of Photographers.

Initially training with Claire, I achieved complete safety training and learn many techniques and skills of posing babies. I travelled to North Yorkshire to spend a day with Claire on a 1-2-1 basis to learn some more skills for wrapping babies, posing and perfecting posing on beanbags. Claire suggested we work with a SIB instead of a baby model, so we could get things nailed down. A SIB is a Stand-In Baby; a doll used by medics and photographers which has articulated joints and weighted like a 7lb baby. I’m lucky enough to have a SIB called Rosie, a name given by my daughter. The beauty of a SIB is that it removes the factors that would disturb a real baby, such as hunger, wind and general unsettledness, and allows a photographer to master wrapping, handling and safety techniques. During the day’s training with Claire, I learnt new techniques to master my skills, and had a lot of laughs.

Claire’s husband handcrafts props from wood, I find it hard to resist all the lovely things that he makes! Of course, I acquired a new accessory; a beautiful handmade drawer which looks terrific with some fluff and a wrapped baby.

I am now wondering when the best time would be to mention to hubby that I’m going to need an extension to my studio due to all of the beautiful props and clothing I keep buying for my clients!
